Associate General Counsel Manage the policies, procedures and personnel to achieve a fair and equitable resolution of pending claims and/or lawsuits. Assist in the selection of defense attorneys used to handle the lawsuits as they are assigned. Negotiate lawsuit files for a fair and equitable settlement. This requires extensive work in contacting all parties involved and interpreting various legal documents. Conduct performance audits for the Litigation Unit. Participate in the Claims Committee for evaluation and coverage questions. Participate in the Agent Errors and Omissions (E & O) Program to achieve a fair and equitable resolutions of pending claims and/or lawsuits. Participate in providing direction to the supervisory/management staff in the training of company personnel in proper claim handling procedures so as to enhance the Company's overall ability to handle claims and/or lawsuits in a cost-effective manner. Participate in Insurance Department complaint resolution and/or audit process. Other responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Vice President General Counsel/Corporate Secretary/Chief Claims Officer.
The candidate should be college and law school graduate. License to practice law in one jurisdiction preferred. Should have 3 years insurance claims and/or regulatory related and/or insurance litigation experience. 1 year experience in the active practice of law, including experience in the active defense of insurance claims and/or lawsuits preferred. Should have in depth knowledge of contract law and insurance law, policy forms, language and coverages. Must have familiarity with general principles of insurance law and regulations applicable to the company's operations. Familiarity with Insurance Department complaint resolution process/audit procedures are needed. Should have familiarity with general principles of corporate law. Excellent communication and legal research skills (both written and oral) are imperative. Must possess the ability to assess facts, make decisions concerning coverage, and be able to successfully work with insureds, agents, claimants, defense attorneys, and plaintiff attorneys. Must also have a working knowledge of unfair claims practices and claims situations leading to bad faith exposures; possess management/supervisory skills and abilities. Should possess the ability to work with Departments of Insurance on various regulatory and compliance issues and be able to work with the public, agents and company personnel cordially and respectfully.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
